London and South East Ironsides Spring Luncheon

Unfortunately only six London and South East Ironsides members, together with three of their ladies attended the spring luncheon on Wednesday 18th April 2007.

Whilst we were a much smaller than usual gathering, because of illness and prior engagements of some of our members, we drank to the health and quick recovery, if illness caused their absence and hoped we would see them all at our next planned luncheon in the autumn.

As usual, it was held at the Orpheus Restaurant, which is adjacent to Fenchurch Street railway station, near to Tower Bridge and, to its regulars, is renowned for its excellent chef and fish cuisine.

Everyone enjoyed pre-luncheon drinks to exchange stories of what they have been up to since our last get together, which unfortunately had been a year before, but this did mean we all had plenty to recount.

Following an excellent meal with fine conversation we were entertained by Tom Baxter-Wright telling us about some of his near death experiences throughout his very eventful life.

Having exchanged tales, enjoyed good food and wine, together with an entertaining speaker, we parted to go our separate ways vowing to meet again in the autumn.

It is interesting to note that whilst we were competitors during our business life we enjoy each other company now that we are retired.

The Secretary will write to you with details of the next meeting.

NEWSLETTER MARCH 2007

We are still going strong with regular participation from our membership.

The Christmas Party at the Holiday Inn at Solihull went off very well with the usual festive entertainment organised by John and Denise Richardson with their customary flair.

NASS having moved their offices we held our January Committee meeting at the Citadel in Corporation Street, Birmingham. We were well looked after as usual by Margaret and Karen. As you will all be aware Margaret has decided to retire after 25 years service with NASS. Ironsides decided to make a collection for her and the members’ donations enabled us to present her with a cheque for £500.00. This was presented to Margaret by President George Glassbrook at the Founders Lunch and A.G.M. on March 14th at the Eaton Hotel, Birmingham. Margaret was overwhelmed at the generosity of Ironsides (her words) and her husband, Phil, read out her response. Some pictures taken at the time are with this newsletter.

We have been successful, with Margaret’s help, in gaining inclusion to the NASS website and those with Internet access can view this by going to: http://www.nass.org.uk

The London and South East Area has run into a problem due to Alan Knisely’s uncertain health. Alan, who has looked after this area for many years has finally decided to stand down and as a temporary measure your Secretary will organise the twice a year luncheons at the Orpheus Restaurant in London. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 18th April at 12.00 noon.

Alan, who has been organising these events (which started in a pub) for the past 25 years wishes to thank all the members for their support and friendship.

We have lost three of our oldest members since our last Newsletter, Colin Glegg, Jack Wells and Les Paxton.

Ben Westall and Jack Hector have resigned.
